People certainly have and are paying into Social Security. The problem is that the Politicians lied. The money went directly into the general fund. It's gone.

Now, the only way to receive benefit, there must be more people inducted into the fraudulent system. What you and I pay now goes into the general fund. Our money funds people that paid in before. It doesn't go in there for us. We are reaching the point were not enough will be going in to pay what going out. So, other tax sources will fund it(?) It's a Ponzi scheme. Now, those that are collecting are entitled to our money.

Hey, Renee.
This morning I was writing a piece on racism and the current crop of Republican presidential candidates, and the caption I wrote one of the Tea Party illustrations made reference to the unfortunate phrase "uppity nigger." And I thought maybe some of my younger readers wouldn't be familiar with that phrase, so I looked around for a concise definition. None of the above argues that collective bargaining, itself, is a human right, only that the premises and conditions under which collective bargaining take place partake of a sort of "human rightyness." By the same token, we have an undoubted right to free association and free speech, but cannot parley that association and speech into an orgy in a public park. we have the right to bear arms, but not to slaughter our neighbors with those weapons. I nowhere see in your statement a specifically mentioned right to collective bargaining.

Why is there no fundamental right not to bargain? In every aspect of my life I have no right to bargain, nor am I compelled to bargain. But if I join a union I get "rights" or can make demands that others don't have available to them. Is that fair? I should also note that my right to assiciate is not impacted.

If you want the opinion of a socialist, the reason for private sector capital to attack public unions is this- class warfare. The rich elite hate the concept of middle-class workers getting together and fighting for rights. They hate the idea that any middle class workers get healthcare, pensions, etc. They hate the middle class. The idea that workers should be have dignified retirements, reasonable healthcare and organize together could also be transferred from public workers to their fellow private-sector workers. All this gets in the way of accumulating more wealth, more capital.

Also, if you bust public unions, public workers will be paid less and receive fewer benefits paving the way for more corporate subsidy and tax-cuts for the rich. In the case of Walker, you just give the tax cuts first, then use that as an excuse to assault middle-class workers.

Its both a matter of government budgets and ideology.

There is plenty of ignorance to go around. It doesn't reside on one side of the issue. I do believe that immigrants should attempt to learn English, just as my great grandparents did and were very proud to do. Just as I make an attempt to speak in the language of countries I visit.

As for Spanish, why does that language get a pass from you, being as it is also an imported language?

Immigration should be promoted as a good thing. All who want should be able to come here, less those who come to do us harm or escape from the justice of their homeland. The problem being we should be able to find out which is which.

Generally, we should make it easier to come legally and more difficult to do it illegally.

oops.. I also wanted to say I think it's nice (and eloquent) how you pointed out they way you still found them likable as PEOPLE up until that nasty topic. It's often that way, the people don't actually have horns on the tops of their heads when you talk eye to eye. Seems in a way to actually make it worse, or harder to bridge the gap, and hard to maintain an "Us v. Them" position right back at them. It's confusing and deflating in a way.

Okay I admit, it's now an unwieldy sentence, but I think it's nice to remember how "sahib" these people are.
